INTEREST TO ARTISTS Toni Hippeli Mapping Art Glass Trails for New Mexico Help us put glass on the map in New Mexico! We want to include as many artists, galleries, schools, resources and events as possible. We can’t include you if we don’t know who you are. So if you are involved in any way with art glass in New Mexico, please send an email to glasstrails@tiganm.org and you will receive program information as soon as details are available. Led by TIGA: Taos Institute for Glass Arts, this exciting collaborative project is made possible in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Our shared goal is to put our New Mexico glass artists on the map and bring the art market to them. The New Mexico Art Glass Trails initiative will produce a guide for exploring art glass destinations throughout the state with suggested tours based on geography or area of interest. The printed brochure and supporting map will identify specific locations where glass is featured and will emphasize the artists and galleries who contribute to New Mexico’s robust studio glass movement. The Glass Trails website will ensure that timely and current information is always available and it will provide the opportunity to offer information about the participants along with associated art images. In addition, the website will provide those artists who have an online business model the opportunity to have their art images displayed with active links to supporting websites. The New Mexico Art Glass Trails is modeled after the New Mexico Fiber Arts Trail, a pioneering state led, arts-based economic development and cultural tourism effort focused on the fiber arts industry. The new Glass Trails project recognizes and celebrates the unique contributions that New Mexico artists have made during the growth of the studio glass movement over the last 50 years. Statewide, there are over 200 glass artists currently carrying on a tradition of glass innovation that began on Santa Fe’s Canyon Road in 1968. Glass as art takes many forms, utilizing traditional techniques such as glass blowing and stained glass and venturing into the world of sculpting, casting and fusing, with combinations of these and other techniques. Today, we can see the influence of ancient pueblo traditions displayed in contemporary glass mediums by exciting young Native American artists. The numerous artist studios and cooperatives, contemporary art galleries, museums, educational institutions, exhibitions, resource suppliers, and industry supporters have enhanced New Mexico’s reputation as a leader in glass innovation and artistic expression. The guide will be distributed at Visitor Centers and Chambers of Commerce locations in all regions of the state and through New Mexico Arts as well as the New Mexico Tourism Department. Additional marketing and promotional support will come from cultural tourism sites, participating businesses and associated websites, industry specific organizations, and targeted out of state venues. For more information about the New Mexico Art Glass Trails, please contact the project director, Toni Hippeli, at TIGA (575 613-6484) or email toni@tiganm.org. Watch for news updates and announcements as well as a formal call for artists. Informational outreach visits are being planned for communities with interested artists. Publication is anticipated for the Spring of 2012.
